Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) of Sri Lanka was entrusted to Carry out the Feasibility study of the Wee Oya Reservoir project (WORP) under the Climate Resilience Improvement Project (CRIP) implemented under the purview of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Development, Irrigation and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development. Consultancy services cover the feasibility study for Wee Oya reservoir based on pre-feasibility study done by CRIP on Kelani basin. Main objectives of Wee Oya reservoir are controlling flood, which effects middle and lower Kelani basin, and augmenting drinking and industrial water supply in the Lower Kelani Basin during droughts. The secondary objective is harnessing possible hydro energy. The project area is located in Punugala, Yatiyantota area about 60km East of Colombo. The Wee Oya, which is an upper sub-basin of the Kelani River, is formed by joining number of streams draining from the Dolosbage mountain range. To form the Wee Oya reservoir, the Wee Oya is planned to be intercepted 60 m AMSL of river bed elevation near Malalpola by a dam to impound a multipurpose reservoir with a maximum FSL of 129 m AMSL. The area of the Wee Oya catchment upto the dam location is about 58 km2. Elevation in the catchment ranges from about 60 masl to 1200 masl.

Project Value:
USD 514 Million

Uma Oya multipurpose Development project is proposed to transfer water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya in order to develop hydropower and to irrigate the dry and less developed south-eastern region of the central highlands. Capacity of the electrical power generation is 120 MW and irrigation of approx. 25,000 acres of paddy lands. This project consists of two reservoirs at Puhulpola and Dyraaba, a conveyance tunnel linking the two reservoirs of 3.98 km. length, a 15.2 km long HeadRace tunnel, a powerhouse and a TailRace tunnel. The Puhulpola Reservoir is on the Dalgolla Oya and the Dyraaba Reservoir on the Mahatotilla Oya, both rivers discharging into the Uma Oya. Essentially, both reservoirs are in the Uma Oya sub-basin in the Mahaweli basin. The Puhulpola Reservoir and the Dyraaba Reservoir are connected by the Link tunnel. The Head Race Tunnel (HRT) with an intake in the Dyraaba Reservoir conveys an annual water conveyance of 145 MCM, leads to the Power House at Karandagolla with installed capacity of 120 MW.  The tailrace tunnel from the Power House is directed into the Kirindi Oya. The Headeace Tunnel excavation is done by 2 Nos. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) which is a distinct part of this project.
